In an increasingly globalized world, the local is gradually making a comeback. It is a reflection of the growing ecological awareness, the human need for rootedness and identity, and the insatiable desire for novelty and uniqueness. Local traditions, local resources, local production is what distinguishes a place on the global map and what makes it relatable and meaningful locally.

However, the global should not be regarded as the enemy of localness, but as an integral part of its current dynamics. New possibilities of movement and communication have added new layers to the local economic, social and environmental realities. No place and no society can afford to remain static. Urban life requires both the depth of local culture, and the reach of global networks. The notion of «local» has shifted and calls for a revisit.

The Summer School is going to study local issues and respond to them with contextual, custom-made proposals, yet keeping a global perspectivein mind. We are going to work closely with local residents, learning from their knowledge of the territory and creating new links within communities and spaces. We are going to reposition values and programs to reveal new potentials, thus helping a local shift take place.

Deadline for submitting applications is May 7, 2013.
