RTU celebrates its 151st birthday

In celebration of the 151st birthday of Riga Technical University (RTU) on October 14, celebrations are being held throughout the month.

The 54th International science conference of RTU was started on the exact day the university was founded. The first day of the conference was ended by announcing this years «Scientist of the Year 2013» and «Young Scientist of the Year 2013» award winners. More than 700 authors from all over the world, including Latvia, presented their findings and scientific achievements during the period of five days.

October 19 will pass in the festivities of RTU’s Material Science and Applied Chemistry Faculty’s 150th birthday. This day also marks the start of Latvian chemistry science as a whole. Graduates, faculty and staff will gather at the Riga Latvian Community Hall that evening.

It should be added that November 9 will mark the 150th jubilee of RTU’s Construction Faculty.

RTU is the first higher educational establishment in the territory of present-day Latvia and the oldest technical university in the Baltics, established on 14 October 1862. Some of its most notable graduates and students are the Latvian-born Nobel Prize laureate Wilhelm Ostwald, Michail Dolivo Dobrowolsky – the founder of three phase electrical system, and many other people who have earned their name in science and society.

At present, RTU is the second largest university in Latvia with 15 000 students studying in 8 faculties. RTU currently offers 134 internationally recognized study programs and is home to 33 scientific institutes and 30 laboratories specializing in a broad range of research fields.

Being the largest technical university in the region, RTU has put much effort to transform itself into a modern third generation university.  Our mission is to conduct advanced scientific research vital for the growth of the Latvian national economy as well as to educate and train highly qualified specialists, who are both competitive and demanded on the international labor market.
