RTU Science and Innovation Centre Among the Organisers of the «Deep Tech Atelier» Conference for the First Time

Riga Technical University (RTU) Science and Innovation Centre has become a co-organiser of the most ambitious science-intensive technology conference in the Baltics «Deep Tech Atelier 2024». The conference will take place on 16-17 May in Riga, bringing together more than 1000 participants, including representatives of organisations, industry experts, start-ups, government representatives, policy makers and other science-intensive technology enthusiasts. 

One of the thematic stages of this year's conference, «BioCosmic», the content of which is the responsibility of RTU Science and Innovation Centre in cooperation with «Biocatalyst Foundation and Latvian Space Industry Association, is dedicated to the topics of space and biotechnology, as well as their interactions and interdisciplinary applications to foster innovation. Biotechnology is a strategic priority for Latvia in strengthening its innovation capacity and currently features prominently in three of the five areas of Latvia's Smart Specialisation Strategy. 

The conference will be attended by the Rector of RTU Tālis Juhna, Vice-Rector for Innovation Liene Briede, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Elīna Gaile-Sarkane, Director of the Institute of Biomaterials and Bioengineering of the Faculty of Science and Technology Jānis Ločs, Product Development Manager of the Science and Innovation Centre Kristens Rasčevskis, Senior Researcher at the Institute of Water Systems and Biotechnologies of the Faculty of Science and Technology Brigita Dejus, Aigars Lavrinovičs, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Water Systems and Biotechnology, and Kristaps Kļaviņš, Senior Researcher at the Institute of Biomaterials and Bioengineering, will also present their innovation projects at «Deep Tech Atelier 2024. Several students and researchers of the RTU study programme «Biotechnology and Bioengineering» will also take to the thematic stages of the conference. 

On 15 May, various side-events are planned to accompany «Deep Tech Atelier 2024», including the first biomedical innovation event «Riga Biohack #1: Biomedicine edition», which will bring together leading biotechnology and biomedical researchers, startups and business professionals, and the RTU Science and Innovation Centre Open Day with laboratory tours for conference guests and other interested parties. «The «Deep Tech Atelier» conference has been a platform for promoting the commercialisation of science for several years. RTU is one of the key players in the ecosystem of science-intensive innovation, so it is important for us as a university to participate in conferences of this scale to strengthen collaboration with policy makers and other stakeholders. When assessing Latvia's advantages, we see that space is currently the area with the greatest potential for commercialisation, while biotechnology is the area where we as a university are already able to offer world-class know-how in technology creation,» said L.Briede, RTU Vice-Rector for Innovation.

More than 1000 participants will take part in various presentations by international speakers, discussions, Start-up Demos, hear offers from foreign investors and learn new skills in practical workshops.

«Deep Tech Atelier» 2024 will take place at the conference centre «Fantadroms», Gustava Zemgala gatve 76, Riga, working language - English. More information and free registration.

Last year, more than 1400 participants from 54 countries, including Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Finland, Sweden, Germany, the USA, the Czech Republic, France and other countries, attended the conference. The conference is organised by the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia in cooperation with the RTU Science and Innovation Centre and the Commercialisation Reactor.
